If retirement is something that you would prefer to put at the back of your mind and only deal with when it gets closer to the time, then you might be apprehensive about something that could be very enjoyable. Many people think that they won’t be able to adapt to this new lifestyle, where, generally speaking, there is nothing to do and lots of time in which to do it. If you have been working as a first responder then it can be quite difficult to walk away from this exciting occupation. However, walk away you must, because there is a set age at which all first responders have to retire and unless you can change employment law, it’s going to happen to you.
However, first responder retirement doesn’t have to be the nightmare that you think it might be and there are lots of good reasons why you need to embrace retirement and everything that it has to offer. The following are just a few of the reasons why retirement can be seen as a positive thing.
- You will be healthier & safer – As a first responder you get yourself involved in dangerous situations every single day and so retirement can offer you an opportunity to live a safer life and to experience better health. You will find that your mental health will improve and your stress levels will drop to acceptable levels. You won’t have to deal with difficult situations every day and the hardest decision that you will have to make is whether you want to play two rounds of golf or not.
- You will have new interests – The interests that you had as a first responder were probably quite restrictive and you ended up doing things because that’s what the rest of the guys were doing. Now you have a real opportunity to explore something different and to do something that really brings a smile to your face and a glint in your eye.
- You’ll spend less money – Due to the fact that you are retired, you can take a little bit more time when you go shopping to compare items, and stores. There are many bargains out there that you failed to see because you were in such a hurry to get back to work.
You will still get to see your friends from work because it is very likely that they are going to be retiring soon as well. You still get to have fun conversations and you still get to enjoy a few cold beers on a warm evening. Retirement can be as good and as fun as you want it to be and there is always professional assistance if you’re finding it a little bit difficult to adapt to.
